Behavior
The staff at East is strongly committed to making the experience here one of successes in behavior and academics for all students. We intend to “catch kids being good” in all areas of the school. When you enter East you will see many signs of fish as that is our theme for East. You will also see the words that help students remember how to get caught being good:
Earn respect
Act responsibly
Stay safe
Try your best.
Fish awards- Students will receive fish awards and fish stamps when they are caught being good.
Fish winner- Each Friday one student will be chosen from our class for good behavior throughout the week.
Sea of Success- Every month one student will be chosen from our class for exemplary behavior all month.
For a complete explanation please see the district website.
Our class also receives "pirate gold" coins when we are caught being good. We are filling our pirate treasure box to earn supplies for our fish tank and researching what fish need and what kind of fish would make the best pet for our classroom. I will post updates on our tank here as the students achieve their rewards.

Curriculum
Language Arts: Our main curriculum is Harcourt Grace. It is a themed curriculum that goes by weeks adding all the letters and high frequency words each week.
Math: Our math curriculum is a program by Scott Foresman. This curriculum reinforces the goals we have for Kindergarteners in Math. We spend a lot of time on number concepts and how to “build” numbers. We learn to count all the way to 100, by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. We will also learn how to add and subtract numbers through 5. We do lots of hands on activities and work with lots of manipulative to re-enforce the skills we are learning!
Science: Our science curriculum is through the Battle Creek Science Kits. The units are very hands on and exciting!
Social Studies: For social studies, we will be learning about the calendar, our American flag, and careers.
Writing: We use the Lucy Caulkin’s writing program. This program encourages students to write true stories. Whether that is one word or multiple sentences. We learn to add detail to our writing by adding a picture and later, words. We will also be doing units on “How-to” books, poetry, and non-fiction.
Holland Public Schools are committed to implementing the national Common Core standards. For more information, click here.
